The Way We Were

It’s My Anniversary :-)

Hi everyone! Hope you all are having a great day so far.

Wow, I can’t believe it has been seven years since I published my very first book, In Love With My Best Friend. At that time, I wasn’t thinking about having a career as an author; I just wanted to fulfill my goal by releasing a book. Little did I know, that one book turned into several series, and forty two books total. I had some ups and downs in my career, but nevertheless, I don’t regret what I have went through to get to where I am right now.

To the readers who have stuck by me since the very beginning, I just want to say thank you. Thank you for giving me a chance to share my stories and to let me be myself. Although some of my stories were a bit off the wall, I’m still grateful and blessed that you all continued to support me.

As I continue my journey, I just hope that I can continue to write stories that readers can enjoy, because I still have a lot in me to share.

Again, thank you. 🙂

To celebrate, I decided to do a few giveaways on several platforms, including on my blog. For this giveaway, one lucky winner will be winning signed copies of the entire Love, Life, & Happiness series as well as a $10 gift card from Amazon.

Is The LLH Series Too Sexual?

Happy Sunday everyone!!!

Since the Love, Life, & Happiness series debuted last year in December (which is hard to believe that it’s almost a year), I have received various reviews regarding the books in the series. There were some that loved the series and the characters, but there were others who felt the series was a little on the raunchy side. Although I wrote a post regarding this earlier this year with the issue of how much sex was portrayed in Love Unbroken, now it’s the issue of the entire series that is in question.

Now, I understand that this is a series involving young adults who are in college who are experiencing love for the very first time, but never did I portray these “young adults” as squeaky clean. They are just that; adults who ages ranging from eighteen to twenty-three, who are going to experience sex. I don’t know how college was for some individuals, but when I was in college, this is what happened on a regular basis. It might not have happened as much as these characters experienced, but it happened.

Certain scenes were brought up in the series, especially during Love Unbroken. In the post I wrote earlier regarding the first book in the series; yes, maybe the story was heading to borderline erotica with some of the things the two were doing, but with any couple that is in that stage in their relationship, they will want to experience certain things. It not as if they were experimenting with other people; they were with each other and only each other.

Some had even brought up about Unconditional Love and the amount of sex  scenes Britney and Jayden had. This book was about first love and mind you, the two were virgins and only wanted to be with each other before they actually went through with it. Yes, at the time of the story, they were only 18, but some people get married at 18; so what is wrong with these two having sex?

With each story, it talked about the issue of love and being in love; it’s not about seeing how many people these characters can sleep with or engaging in other activities that deemed inappropriate.

While some believed the characters were lacking direction and only thought about having sex; that was not true at all. Each character was determined and driven with their college education. No one looked at the fact that Shawn and Riana were working on a class project when they were introduced; or Cheryl trying to be independent and working on furthering her education to go to medical school. So sex was not always on these characters’ minds.

For anyone who has read the series, do you think the stories are too sexually charged, or are the stories depict what people who are in love with each other do? Let me know by posting your comment below.

And for those who have not read the post titled “Sex Scenes in Love Unbroken,” I included the link: https://sheenabinkley.wordpress.com/2014/03/27/sex-scenes-in-love-unbroken/

As I mentioned in the previous post, I hope I’m not offending anyone with this post, but this is something that I wanted to express and whether anyone agreed with the subject. If I am offending anyone, that was not my intention and I sincerely apologize.

And in case you are wondering,  Love Always only have two sex scenes.  🙂

Author Interview: Elite Book Promotions

For my next stop during the blog tour for The Wedding Part II, I did an interview with Elite Book Promotions. Check it out!

1. What career did you plan during your education days?

When I was in high school and college, my dream was to be a reporter. I wanted to either do newspaper or television. I even majored in Broadcast Journalism in college, but I realized that’s not want I wanted to do, so I switched majors (to Corporate Communication to graduate) and started to pursue my career in writing.

2. What is your biggest source of inspiration in life?

My biggest inspiration would have to be my faith in God and my family. Being able to go through this journey is a blessing, so I’m fortunate to have such a great support system with my family and for them being there for me.

3. What is the biggest challenge you have faced? How did you overcome it?

The biggest challenge I faced was criticism. When I first started writing, I was not used to the negative comments from people with my stories. Whether it was the storyline or the characters, I couldn’t take the criticism well and it almost made me not write again. I overcame it by having a tougher skin. In this industry, people are going to voice their opinions, so that’s something that I would have to live with. I’m not going to make everyone happy, but I will do what I can to produce great writing to readers and hopefully they will enjoy it.

4. When did you start writing? What is the purpose of your writing?

I started writing at 9 for a project for school. After I wrote the assignment, I realized how much I enjoyed creating a story that I continued to write more. Later, I began to write short stories before expanding into full length novels. My purpose for writing is being able to produce quality work for people to enjoy. I love to create new stories and characters that I hope readers can relate to, which I hope I can continue doing for years to come.

5. Which of your work has been published so far? Would you like to share a synopsis of your work?

My latest novel, The Way We Were, is the fourth book in the Love, Life, & Happiness series, and this is Monica and Donnell’s story. With Monica, she has done a lot of crazy things in previous books, so hopefully readers will be able to relate with her and sort of root for her once the story is over.

Here is the synopsis:

Monica:

I’d always been unlucky with love. No matter how much I’ve tried to experience it, something always happens to make me turn away. When I was with Donnell Patterson, I believed I finally had a chance at it, but I ended up destroying it by being selfish. Now, I have a second chance with Zack Hall. He’s a woman’s dream – smart, generous, and sexy as hell. But now that I’m with someone else, why does Donnell keep coming back into my thoughts? Should I let go of the past, and start with someone new, or go back to the person that I’ve always considered my one true love?

Donnell:

Monica Taylor and I have had our shares of ups and downs. Honestly, we had more downs than ups. But no matter what we did to each other, we always found our way back to each other; but she did the unthinkable when she tried to hook up with Marcus Walker. Now, I’m with someone new, who makes me really happy. Dominique Sawyer is amazing; not only is she smart and beautiful, but she’s also drama-free. But if she’s so perfect, why do I keep thinking about the person who has continuously broke my heart?

6. What are you working on next?

I’m currently working on the fifth book of the LLH series, Love Always. This is another story about Riana and Shawn, which they are going through a lot of situations throughout their relationship. They will have to realize is their love strong enough to make things work in their relationship.

7. What are your future plans?

I have three new series coming soon. Two are spin-offs from my current series,In Love With My Best Friend and Love, Life, & Happiness, while the other is a brand new series titled Resisting Temptation. The spin-offs will be available next year, while the first book in the Resisting Temptation series will be available in December.

8. How much real life goes into fiction writing?

For me, there may be some scenes in a story that I will depict my real life into. With Love Unbroken, although majority of the story was fiction, there were scenes that described my relationship with my husband. In the new story Love Always, there will also be scenes that will explain a little to how my husband and I dealt with the birth of our son. In other words, for me, it’s okay to put a little of your life into a story, that way it can be more believable to your readers.

9. What is the last book you finished reading?

The last book I read was Reality Check by Camisha Almonor. The story is about best friends whose lives changed after an unexpected night together. I really loved the story. It kept me interested throughout the entire story.

10. What is the current book you are reading?

Currently, I have A Crazy Little Thing Called Love by Christina Jones next on my Kindle. I really want to read this book, but since I’m writing, I haven’t had a chance to yet.

11. Your Favorite book and why?

Anything by Carl Weber. I just love him as an author because he knows how to deliver the drama! I especially love The Choir Director. I haven’t started on the sequel yet, but I know it will be just as good as the first book.

12. Are any of the characters like you? In what ways?

I think there’s a little in me in all of my characters, especially with Camille (In Love With My Best Friend) and Riana (Love Unbroken). With Camille, I tend to be shy and reserved sometimes like her, but can also be a bit bold when I need to. With Riana, she has a spunky personality, in which I can relate to. She is also the peacemaker of the group, which she does a lot of between Cheryl and Monica.

13. If you were a celebrity, who would you be? Why?

I haven’t really thought about being someone else, but if I had to choose, it would probably be Kerry Washington. She has a grace about her and seemed pretty down to earth. Also, I love her as Olivia Pope on Scandal!

20140830-104413-38653762.jpg

Hi everyone!! Here is the preview of the prologue from The Way We Were. The book will be released next Friday, September 26th, but is now available for pre-order on Amazon!!

August, 2012

“I can’t believe you dragged me out tonight.”

“Why not? This is the last night before our classes start, so of course I’m going to have some fun.”

I glared at my friend, Cassandra Morris, and sighed. Figured she would, considering she never cared about school anyway. She was just attending college to get away from her parents.

I sighed; I had been away from my family for a week now, and I was already homesick. If I was feeling like this now, I probably wouldn’t even survive the semester. When I applied to Shaw, I only did so because it was an hour away from home, just in case I wanted to leave and go to a school in Houston. But I made up my mind to actually enjoy the time I had here, so I planned to; I hoped.

Cassandra looked at me. “Stop being a Debbie Downer. You’re going to have fun tonight. You might even meet a fine man to talk to.”

“I doubt it.” I sighed.

Since I’d known her, I realized that men were Cassandra’s weakness. She never cared about anything else. I hope I don’t fall into that trap. I’ve been boyfriend-free for the past three months, mainly because of what happened with the guy I’d been seeing, Jason Hardaway. I still can’t believe he had been cheating on me with my friend’s cousin. He’d been seeing the both of us for months. And to think, I wanted to be friends with her. Well, that ship has sailed.
“I have been thinking, though. I’m giving myself this semester to stay in school; if I don’t like it, I’ll leave to travel the world.”

I shook my head at Cassandra. “Are you serious?”

“Yeah, why not. We only live once, so we might as well enjoy the time we have. You know I’m not the school type. I barely passed high school, so why would I want to continue with college?”
“Do your parents know?”

“No, but they’ll know once they receive the credit card statement for the tickets I purchase.”
I rolled my eyes. This girl is hopeless.

She pulled into a parking spot at the club, and we got out of the car. I looked around; getting a little excited at the idea I was at a club near the college town. Maybe Cassandra was right; I might actually meet someone tonight.

After the bouncer checked our IDs, we were inside. The place was packed as I tried to get through a couple who were slow grinding on each other. I turned up my nose. With the way they were moving, they might as well just take their clothes off and have sex on the dance floor.

Cassandra smiled. “Now, I don’t know why you’re making that face. You’re not that innocent, Monica.”

“I think there are some things that should be left in the bedroom.”

“If you insist.”

I looked over near the bar and saw a couple of guys talking. I continued staring at one, and he was now looking directly at me. Cassandra looked over at him and smiled.

“Hmm, he’s fine. Go talk to him.”

“I don’t think so.”

“Please, girl. Go have some fun, because I’m definitely about to,” she said, while looking at one of his friends. She went over to the bar, leaving me alone. I sighed, went over to a table and sat down. I moved my head to the beat, wishing I was out on the floor, dancing with someone.

“Looks like you’re enjoying this song.”

I looked up and saw the same guy I’d been gawking at earlier. My heart started to beat faster at the sight of him. Damn, he’s gorgeous! His hazel eyes stared directly into mine, while his chocolate brown skin glowed under the club lights. I was already imagining his strong arms around me, his lips touching my skin, and his medium-built frame moving against my body, which already had me soaking wet.

“Yeah. This is one of my favorite songs.”

“Cool. I see your friend is already talking to one of my friends.”

“Yeah; Cassandra doesn’t waste anytime with anything. If she sees something she wants, she goes for it.”

“Are you saying you’re not like that?”

“I am with certain things.”

“What if I say I’m the same way?”

I glanced at him and smiled. “Are you saying you’re doing that now?”

“Most definitely. I’m Donnell,” he said, extending his hand to me.

“Monica,” I replied, accepting his handshake.

“I have to say, you are beautiful.”

“Thank you.”

“You want to dance?”

I nodded as I put my hand in his and went out onto the floor. Hopefully, I’ll be able to talk to him more after our dance; like Cassandra said, I have to live in the moment, and that’s exactly what I was doing.

***

After we were on the dance floor for almost an hour, it was time for me to take a break. We went over to the bar and sat down. While he ordered a beer, I declined, figuring I didn’t need any type of drink from a man. If I wanted to do anything, it would be on my judgment and not anyone else’s.
“Are you enjoying yourself?”

“Definitely. Thanks for hanging out with me, especially since my friend ditched me.”

“No problem; I enjoyed spending time with you.”

I smiled when he touched my shoulder. A tingle rushed through me as he glanced into my eyes.

“You want to get out of here? Maybe we could find somewhere to talk.”

I sighed. I knew where this was heading.

“I don’t think so.”

“Why not? If you think I only want to sleep with you, then you’re wrong; even though that thought has crossed my mind several times.”

“I’m sure. Listen, Donnell, I think you’re a great guy, but I barely know you, so I won’t be going anywhere with you. In fact, I need to find Cassandra.”

He nodded, while I pulled out my phone. I noticed there was a text from her. I guess I didn’t get it since I was dancing. I sighed and put my phone back into my clutch.

“What’s wrong?”

“Evidently, Cassandra wanted to bone your friend, so she left with him. She was my ride to the dorm.”

Donnell drank the rest of his beer. “So how do you feel about going somewhere?”

I sighed. “Sure.”

He smiled, tipped the bartender, and took my hand.

“Let’s enjoy the rest of our evening.”

I smiled as we left the club, not knowing what to expect with the rest of the evening with Donnell Patterson…
