31 Days, 31 Authors- Sheena Binkley

Merry Christmas, everyone! I know what you’re thinking: Why am I getting another go-around since I participated in the 30 Days, 30 Authors event? Due to personal reasons, one of the authors backed out at the last minute; so I decided to take their spot. Besides, I think a lot has changed from the last author’s event. So here’s my second interview. Enjoy! 🙂

interview

1. Besides writing, what else do you like to do?

Besides writing, I love to hang out with my family and friends, listen to music (old school mainly), and just relax. That’s something I haven’t been doing lately, so when I have a chance to do it, I take advantage of it, lol.

2. What inspired you to become an author?

It all started when I was nine and I had to do a story for a class project. I loved writing it so much that I decided to continue to write short stories and eventually a series titled Homeroom, which is based on a group of friends as they go through the ins and outs of high school. I love to write, so it wasn’t hard to pursue something that I hope I can turn into a full-fledged career.

3. What was your first reaction when your debut novel was published?

I cried, mainly because I was seeing my dream come true. Not only that, but the one person that supported me with my writing, which was my mom, was not here to share in the celebration. I know she was looking down on me in heaven, proud that I stepped out in faith and released my first book. That alone was the most important factor to me.

4. Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

Besides still writing (praying that I am), I hope to be a New York Times best-seller. I’m an Amazon best-seller, but to me, you made it to the big times if you’re either on the New York Times or USA Today’s best-seller’s list. I also would love to own my own bookstore and sell only independently owned books. I think authors should support each other, especially independent authors; therefore, this would be a wonderful way in doing that.

I also would like to write a children’s book someday. I probably will in the next two years.

5. What advice can you give to anyone who wants to become an author?

For me, I would say to never give up on your dreams. There will be doubters and haters who don’t want you to succeed, but do not listen to them. Being able to write and release a book is a blessing, so you should go out and pursue it. Don’t hide it because you will never know your potential if you do. Also, make sure you make the right decisions with publishing your books. If you want to be independent, then be independent; if you want to go to a publisher, make sure it’s one that fits you and your writing style. Don’t go somewhere because they’re popular or have a lot of readers supporting them. Go to one that you are comfortable with and know that you will shine with.

Excerpt from A Love, Life, & Happiness Christmas

Prologue

Shawn

What is the definition of family? Does family have to be by blood only, or can it be by association? To me, family aren’t just the people related to you; instead, it’s the people who will be with you through the good and the bad. They believe in you, no matter what, and will love you unconditionally. Sure, I have that with my biological family, but I also have it with the people I’ve known since stepping foot at Shaw University six years ago. We’ve have been through so much, which has given us a unique bond that no one can break.

Now that we’ve all graduated college and ventured out into the real world, we’ve experienced even greater challenges; but no matter what, we still had each other’s backs, making our bond even stronger.

With our careers and kids, we barely have time to hang out; that’s why we made a pact in February to clear our schedules during the Christmas holiday and spend it at the Robertson’s cabin. My wife, Riana, and bro-in-law, Jayden, frequented the cabin when they were younger. Although Ri hasn’t been there in years, Jay has, and I’m sure it will bring back great memories for him and his wife, Britney.

As we arrived, I parked my Dodge Charger in the winding driveway as Riana looked around. She turned to me with her eyes lit up.

“Wow, this place has really changed!” she exclaimed. “I haven’t been here since I was a kid.”

“Your uncle owned the place, right?”

She nodded. “Yeah. Now that he’s passed, Jay has been the one keeping it up.”

“Mommy, is there a TV here?” our son, Elis, asked.

Riana turned to look at him with a smile. “There is, but we probably won’t be using it. We’re going to spend time as a family and do family activities.”

“Mommy…” he whined.

“Elis, we talked about this. Besides, Preston will be here, so you’ll have fun,” I added. Ever since Elis turned four, he’s developed a smart mouth. I guess I can’t blame him too much since that’s how I was growing up.

He leaned back in his car seat and folded his arms with a mean scowl. I gave him the death stare, and he quickly turned that scowl to a pout.

“Don’t try my patience, Elis. I’ve done all that with your Meme and Papa; it doesn’t work.”

Riana looked at me. “Baby, stop. He’s only four.”

“And he’s old enough to not try my patience.”

She shook her head, wearing a tiny smile. I noticed her eyes light up again. “There’s something I want to talk about later.”

“What is it?”

“You’ll know soon enough.” She said then gave me a kiss.

When we turned to look at Elis, who looked disgusted, we saw Marcus’ BMW X5 pull up behind us and smiled. He got out of the driver’s seat then went to get my niece, Troian, from the back seat. She was only three-months-old, but she was already a firecracker. She probably got that from her mother, Cheryl.

“I didn’t think they would bring Troian,” Riana said.

“You know Cheryl wouldn’t leave her. Besides, the cabin is equipped with everything imaginable, so she’ll be fine.”

Cheryl tapped on the passenger side window, and Riana rolled it down. “Why are you all in the car? It’s cold.”

“We have to wait on Jay; he has the key.”

“Are you serious?! It’s freezing!” Cheryl shrieked.

“That’s why we’re sitting in the car, and I’m sure there’s heat in the BMW. Besides, Jay is almost here,” I told her.

She rolled her eyes and walked back to Marcus’ SUV. He came over to my side, and I rolled down the window.

“Don’t pay her any mind; she’s been moody all day,” he explained.

“I see why: She’s barely getting any sleep,” Riana said, staring at Marcus. “Speaking of which, why does it seem like you’re okay?”

“Believe me, it’s affecting me, too; I’m just not showing it.”

“Hopefully, this doesn’t ruin our vacation.” Riana muttered.

“Marcus! Bring Troian back to the car!” Cheryl fumed.

“See?” Marcus pointed out then headed back.

I looked at Riana, who shrugged. “Cheryl has the right to be upset. She shouldn’t be out in the cold, whether she’s bundled up or not.”

Several minutes later, Jay and Brit finally pulled up along with Monica and Donnell. Monica rushed out of the car as Donnell threw his hands up.

“God, that man is a damn headache!” she yelled.

Jayden looked between them and hurried to the cabin door.

“Sorry we’re late, but you all can see why,” Britney apologized, coming over to us. Riana got out of the car and hugged her, peeking into the double stroller. Jay and Brit’s twins, Carter and Isabella, were both asleep.

“How are my niece and nephew doing?” Riana asked, pulling the blanket up on Isabella.

“They’re fine; the feedings are becoming a hassle, though. But now that Jay is back, it’s a little better,” she replied as we walked to the porch.

“I’m sure it is. I even missed you, big bro,” Riana told Jayden, embracing him.

“It won’t be long before I’ll be back in the states. Believe me, I love being in Italy, but I miss my family.”

“What about Zack? He’s not going to try out for any teams?” Riana asked.

“I think he likes it there, especially since Ciara moved there permanently.”

“Why are we still out here in the cold?” Cheryl interrupted with an attitude. She quickly picked up Troian and stomped inside.

“What’s her issue? It’s not even that cold,” Jayden said.

“What we’re going through now: lack of sleep,” Britney explained and rubbed Jay’s shoulder.

“Let’s get this vacay started,” I suggested as we went inside.

“What about everyone else? We can’t do anything without them, especially Mika and Devin. They’re getting married here,” Riana pointed out.

Mika and Devin’s second child was due to arrive any day now, and Mika insist on getting married before their baby arrived. With their busy schedules, they weren’t able to plan a wedding, so Riana had this elaborate idea to plan it. I think this is all for the new book she’s writing.

We walked into the cabin, taking in how spacious the area looked. Jay had done a lot of renovations throughout the years, including brightening the lights and adding modern furniture. He also added two rooms, which is good, considering all the people that will be here.

“When are your parents coming?” Britney asked Jayden and Riana as she sat on the black leather loveseat.

“Tomorrow. Marc had some things to take care of with the team before leaving,” Riana answered, referring to her and Jayden’s stepfather.

With the scandal involving Jayden and Zack a year ago, Marc lost his coaching position with the Baker Trojan but was ultimately hired back by Shaw University. Despite the backlash from several board members, their mouths quickly shut once he won them another championship. Jay even helped with practice during his off-season, which had helped them with their recent championship.

“I hope they come. I really want us to go out,” Cheryl said.

“You do realize we’re almost an hour away from Baker, right? There is a bar 10 miles out, but it’s not worth going to,” Jayden pointed out.

“Still sounds good to me,” Cheryl quipped.

“Is everything okay, Cher?” Riana asked.

“Everything is peachy, just peachy,” she answered, still holding Troian.

We looked around at each other as Monica rushed into the cabin with her two kids. She almost slam the door in Donnell’s face before stomping into the common room.

“Really, Monica?!” Donnell yelled while dumping their luggage on the floor.

“I don’t want to talk to you right now!”

“I think we should. You’re being unreasonable.”

“And you’re being possessive, like always!”

“Here we go,” I muttered, taking a seat beside Ri. This was their daily routine.

“Maybe you two should go outside and ‘talk,’” Riana suggested, using air quotes.

“I don’t need to talk to Donnell. I’ve said my piece; he just doesn’t want to accept it.”

“Because you didn’t talk to me about it!” he retorted.

I shook my head at them, thinking they needed to grow up. But despite the constant bickering and the overly dramatic behavior, this is still my family, and I’m going to miss them when I leave Baker. But the hardest part is telling Ri…

Author Interview

  1. What inspired you to become a Multicultural, IR or BWWM Romance writer?

Since I’m a multi-genre author, the stories that I write are mainly the stories that have strike my interest. When I first started out in the industry, IR or Multicultural stories were all that I was writing because not only do I love the genre, but I have a bit of experience with it.

  1. Besides writing, what are some of your favorite things?

Before becoming a writer, I was a reader first, but I don’t really have the time for it any longer, so I hope to get back into reading because there are a lot of great stories out that I haven’t had a chance to read.

Besides that, I love to shop, watch TV (when I have the time), and spend time with my family.

  1. Name at least two (2) authors that you admire who write Multicultural, IR or BWWM Romance?

Lolah Lace and Xyla Turner

  1. What types or genre of books do you enjoy reading? What are you currently reading?

IR, of course, romance, women’s fiction, and Christian fiction. Currently, I’m not reading anything.

  1. Where do you expect to be in your career as an author five (5) years from now?

I would love to be on the NYT Best-Seller list. Since I started one of my goals as a publisher this year, I would like to start my other goal in the next few years by owning my own bookstore that caters to indie AA romance authors.

  1. What advice can you give to new authors who’s interested in writing in this genre?

Never give up on your dreams. There will be a lot of naysayers and negativity surrounding you, even from the ones you would never think to be towards you, but you have to keep pushing to reach your ultimate goal. Also, always do your research. This was something that I didn’t do starting out; even though I have faced a lot of issues, I wouldn’t have traded those moments because it made me become a wiser author and a stronger person.

Special message from Sheena to you …

To everyone who have read my books, I would love to take the time and say thank you. Thank you so much for taking a chance on me and for allowing me to share my stories to you. Writing has been a hobby of mine since I was nine years old and I never imagined that I would turn it into a career. I love creating new storylines and different characters, so for me, I’m still living my dream. So again, thank you all so much and I hope you all continue to read my stories for years to come.

30 Days, 30 Authors- Sheena Binkley

2012-07-15 00.52.24

Hi everyone! How is everyone enjoying the event so far? For me, I couldn’t host the event without getting in on the fun too, lol. Although a lot of you know me since this is my blog, there are quite a few readers who still doesn’t know who I am, so with that being said, let me introduce myself and some of the books that I have written. 🙂

Another dream of mine is to own my own publishing company. I want to be able to give authors a voice and to choose what type of stories they want to write. I know with a lot of hard work, it will happen soon. I can feel it.

“Are you seriously going to do this right now?”

“Do what? I told you before we came in here what my intentions were. You agreed to them, so I thought everything was straight.”

The girl, Chelsea, Cecilia, whatever her name was, gave me an impatient glance before pulling down her skirt. I didn’t know what her deal was, but I told her point blank what I wanted right now, and striking up a conversation wasn’t one of them. I glanced at Carrie–that’s her name – taking in her medium-length honey blonde hair, smooth auburn-colored skin, and knockout body that I wanted pressed up against me, but I guess she had other ideas. When I told her I wanted to have some fun, I thought she automatically knew what I meant. I thought wrong.

“Listen, if you think I’m just going to give it up to you right now, you’re sadly mistaken.”

“Hasn’t stopped most girls before,” I said with a sexy grin.

Carrie shook her head and sighed.

“I’m not one of these girls you’re occasionally with on campus. I have more respect for myself than that, Morgan.”

“Maybe so, but I think you wanted to see for yourself what girls say about me.”

“Get over yourself, Morgan,” she told me, going to the door and opening it.

I sighed and put on my shirt. Oh well, it didn’t matter. She wasn’t the first girl and definitely wouldn’t be the last. I knew I should stop being an ass towards women, but to be honest, I couldn’t help it. I just wanted to have fun and not be tied down to anyone. I mean, was it a crime to feel that way? To my knowledge, it wasn’t, so why should anyone else be upset about it? The only concern I had before graduating college was living my life, and if that included banging every female at Thompson University, then damn it, I would.

Maybe there was a reason why I felt this way. No, it didn’t have anything to do with a relationship that went wrong or a girl cheating on me; it’s just the fact that I hadn’t met anyone worth committing to. Most of the girls I’d dated were just like me, only wanting to have fun and not be tied down. But, of course, I was the one looking like the man-whore. My mom thought so, and even my best friend, Lamar thought so. I never really understood why Lamar would think that when he was the same way. Well, he was until he met his current girlfriend, Tamara Morris. The two met during our sophomore year at Thompson, and she automatically turned Lamar into a whipping boy. Nothing was wrong with that, but it wasn’t my style.

I walked over to the mirror near the dresser and looked at my reflection. There could be one girl who could make me change my ways, if I wanted to. Hayley Stevens. Hayley was the definition of perfection. Smooth, creamy skin the color of brown sugar, black natural curls that I wanted to twist my fingers through all day and night, and her lips. Full, thick lips that I wanted to suck and kiss on for eternity. Did I mention that girl had a banging body? Yes, she definitely did. I couldn’t help but notice how her hips were shaped in her favorite jeans or her long legs walking past me when she wore her signature baby doll dresses. She oozed sexiness without even trying. She just naturally was.

I shook my head, trying to shake my thoughts of her. I opened the door and saw her and her friend, Paula Howard, walking towards the stairs. She looked at me with a confident smile and pushed her curls away from her face.

“Hey, Morgan,”

“Hey, Hayley. I didn’t think you would be here.”

“What, I can’t be at a Kappa party?”

“Well, you know how Lamar is.”

“Well, what Lamar doesn’t know won’t hurt him, right?” She asked, giving me a flirtatious smile.

I stared at her, thinking how sexy this girl was. I knew she was flirting with me, and being the man that I am, I could probably use it to my advantage, but I knew I couldn’t. Not with her.

Paula looked at us and sighed.

“Let’s go, Hales. Bye, Morgan,” she said, pulling Hayley along as they went downstairs.

I exhaled and put a hand to my chest. Damn, I wanted her, but I knew if I pursued her, it would only cause trouble.

I could have any girl at Thompson University, and I almost did, but there was one girl I couldn’t have, and that was Hayley. The reason? Hayley is my best friend’s sister.

Lucky is Reading Giveaway Hop!!

Hi everyone!! I’m really excited to be a part of the Lucky Is Reading Giveaway Hop hosted by Stuck in Books. This is my second year and it’s great to be able to share my favorite reads with you all.

I have three books that I really enjoyed reading. Here they are:

Bryson is a ladies man by nature.

And why wouldn’t he be?

He’s young.

He’s single.

He’s sexy.

And he’s fresh off of a record-breaking second year of professional basketball with his whole career ahead of him.

So when he meets Kennedy while interviewing for a new stylist, of course he wastes no time going after her.
Until he finds out she’s engaged.

And even though he knows how wrong it is to be so damn attracted to a taken woman – has already learned his lesson when it comes to taken women – he can’t help but be drawn in by her captivating persona of innocence mixed with a hint mystery.

But when Kennedy finds herself in the same predicament, caught completely off-guard by Bryson’s charm and sex appeal, the line between attraction and distraction suddenly becomes a blur.

Who’s really the distracted one?

(Note: This book is a standalone, but features secondary characters from the Attractions & Distractions series as well as The PreGame Ritual with tiny spoilers.)

When 26 year old Reese accepts a position as a grad assistant, she has no idea an unpleasant encounter with a student will lead to the discovery of what she calls “the trifecta”: fine, intellectual, and a little bit rude – three qualities she finds irresistible in a man. She has no intention of doing anything with that discovery – nothing long term, at least. But everybody knows what happens to best laid plans.

Jason is a grown man. 28 years old, seasoned and scarred by his real-life experience in the world, he’s at Blakewood State University to finish his degree and move on. The last thing he’s interested in is the female population on campus… but sexy, infuriating Reese might be a notable exception.

This isn’t a story of opposites attract.

More like counterparts clash.

Neither of them is afraid to do battle, and neither is willing to back down. Love and war, win or lose… somebody’s gonna end up getting schooled.

It doesn’t have to be true, it just has to seem true. This is a code that Jakari Roberson lives by. He definitely applies this philosophy to his relationship with Qia. He loves her with all of his heart and treats her like a queen. There isn’t anything he won’t do for her. However, Jakari has a big secret that he has managed to keep hidden from Qia for the past 14 years. He has finally made the decision to change, but is it a little too late?

In Qia’s eyes she has the most loving, attentive, romantic, and faithful husband in the world. But, will the picture of her fairytale life shatter when she finds out what Jakari has really been up to? Will the love for her husband be enough to make her stay? Or, will his betrayal be enough to push her over the edge and into the arms of someone more deserving?

Take a journey with these high school sweethearts. It is certainly a long difficult one, but it will be well worth it if they can figure out what constitutes a marriage and if their marriage is really worth saving?

And here is one more:

Elise Thompson always has been the independent one of the Thompson siblings. She never worried about anything or anyone, expect when it comes down to her ex, Dante Wilson. Although she loves him, she can’t be with him, especially with all the issues the two has together.
When she meets Jared Crawford, she starts to see life in a different way. While he wants a relationship with her, Elise is holding back, mainly because of her feelings for Dante. But when issues start to arise between her and Jared and with the reappearance of her mother, she soon realizes what’s important and to live life for herself.
You can win all four of these books by entering into the Rafflecopter giveaway below. A winner will be announced at the end of the hop. Good luck!!

May I Suggest Blog Hop

May-I-Suggest-Giveaway-Hop

Hi everyone! I’m excited to be a part of the May I Suggest Blog Hop through Stuck In Books! With this blog hop, I will be showcasing a couple of books that I think are pretty amazing, but instead of suggesting a particular book, I will be suggesting book series!

The Hudson Series by Colby Taylor

th (5)th (1)th (3)th (2)2370070724951681

One thing I love to read is a story about family and togetherness. No matter how many issues a family will have, at the end of the day, they will be there for each other, and this is what Colby Taylor’s The Hudson series have. Each book highlights a couple and explains the ups and downs they go through in their relationships. There are currently six books in the series, but there could be more to come in the future. For me, the stories can keep coming, because I am in love with this wonderful series!

Free Falling Series by Raven St. Pierre

23436543 (1)2343655123436556 (1)24326121

I fell in love with this series from the first book, Gravity. Samantha and A.J. share such a special relationship and for me, I saw how much the two has grown together as a couple as well as individually throughout the series. Although they had their share of ups and downs, they found their way back to each other and the series wrapped up nicely in the final book, Today. Tomorrow. Always. I love this couple and hate that the series ended!

Attractions & Distractions by Alexandra Warren

2479358925047777

This series is about a young woman discovering herself through her college years. I think we all have been in that stage where we discovered ourselves in college (well, I have anyway). This is one of the reasons why I love this series because it reminds me of when I was in college and the fun I had with my friends. Of course I had my share of tough decisions and heartbreak, but that what make life unpredictable. That what this series is all about. I can’t wait until the third book is released!

Love, Life, & Happiness Series by Sheena Binkley

Processed with Moldiv

I’m not sure if I should be showcasing my own series, but I had to include it since it falls under the same theme that all of these books share. With this series, it’s all about having a great bond and being there for each other through the good and bad times.  Each book highlights a couple as they go through their journey to happiness. This is a feel good series that will not only make you think about your years in college, but also your very first love.

In Love With My Best Friend by Sheena Binkley

10151799_10152520091387315_6354564455728888606_n

I couldn’t end this post without mentioning my other series, In Love With My Best Friend. This series also falls under the “family” theme. These four friends are not only that; they are also a tight-knit family. They celebrate their happy moments and help each other through their rough times. This series is the epitome of how long-lasting friendships should be and the love they all have for each other .

Now that I presented my favorite series, here is the giveaway that is associated with the hop. One lucky winner will receive a $5 Amazon gift card as well as an eBook copy of my very first book, In Love With My Best Friend. With the gift card, you can purchase one of the books above, or choose a book of your liking. The giveaway will end on May 15th, so make sure to enter soon!
