Synopsis:

From the moment Tyler Bradshaw first lays eyes on Madison Kanate, it’s a dream come true. She is everything he wants, yet everything he feels he cannot have. He is determined to keep his distance, but he can’t, not with the love she offers him. They become the best of friends. That works flawlessly, until she wants more….

That was seven years ago.

Madison has come a long way since falling apart at any reminder of Tyler. He had left her questioning God’s plan for her life, and uncertain of how to move forward. Eventually, she takes charge of her life, putting memories of Tyler to rest with a successful interior design business, along with many charitable projects. Anything else, especially love, ranks a distant second.

Tyler and Madison reunite through the shenanigan of Mason, Madison’s twin brother. Tyler wishes he could change the past… but life does not offer do-overs. Even so, he believes God has provided a golden opportunity for him—his last chance to win Madison’s heart. As he begins to open up about his childhood and trailing baggage, Madison realizes that his faith has been built in the face of adversity.

But Tyler’s childhood holds a secret even he doesn’t know. In the face of a staggering revelation that challenges the fabric of his faith, Tyler drops a bombshell of his own. When Madison tries to walk away, she recognizes that deep down she wants happily-ever-after. With her faith rekindled, she decides to trust God, believing she will not be left to pick up the pieces of her heart all over again. But will Tyler allow himself to heal so he can let Madison in? Will they move beyond the past and build a life together?

EXCERPT – Where My Heart Belongs

His heart rate kicked up and he raked a hand over his head as uneasy dread shot through his veins. Still, wisdom demanded he move speedily to help, even if the situation would force him to come face-to-face with someone he was unprepared to see.

“God, help her,” he prayed aloud, before jumping into action.

He moved swiftly to grab his Jeep keys from the coffee table then rushed through the door. He did not relish the journey that now lay before him. Nor did he wish to confront the one thing that would never let him rest—the one painful remorse that continually aggravated his gut. The one thing in his life he needed to fix—his relationship with the woman he had nicknamed Em.

Madison Emma Kanate. She was his first love….

Once his soul found her, he loved her.

One look and he was helpless to her pull. She had caught his attention and lingered in his heart ever since. He had endured two years of being near Madison—drowning in her love. She always stirred him. Around her, he constantly felt the flutter of butterfly wings in his stomach. She made him feel things he longed for… things he couldn’t have.

Despite all the love she offered him, he could not bring himself to reach for her. Fear held him bound, propelling him to escape the source of his misery.

At the first opportunity, he had left it all behind.

He ran.

He had run away like a frightened animal.

And he had kept moving. He hadn’t looked back.

But, he couldn’t outrun the memories or the guilt that haunted him.

Excerpt from Faithful Father:

Dani was nine years old when she was kidnapped from the front porch of her grandmother’s house.  Her kidnapping had been carefully planned and her captors knew exactly how to entice her.

Chocolate.

Most kids loved chocolate, and Dani was no exception.

She lived in an all-black neighborhood in Shreveport, Louisiana.  An assortment of small red, gray, maple and white brick homes lined both sides of Madison Avenue.  No two houses were alike.  But they had one thing in common … the security that comes from being among your own kind in the racist south.  One could exist for days and never see a white person outside of television. The community contained schools, shops, churches and even government services.  Racial tensions were peaking in Shreveport in 1972.  The Police Service Commissioner had blocked local civil rights movements and folks were trying to make it safely from one day to the next.

Even within the safety of their neighborhood, Dani was allowed to be in only one or two places-her house or her Grandmother’s house, which was two houses down.  At any given time she could be found at one of the two homes.

Her best friend was Mrs. Beasley.  Mrs. Beasley had a head made of vinyl. Her face was framed with square black plastic glasses.  She was a blonde-haired baby doll with a soft blue and white polka dot body.  They sat in our imaginary kitchen on the front porch of grandmother’s small, red-brick home.  Sitting in the white metal tulip chair, Dani changed Mrs. Beasley into her new red dress.

The sound of a car slowing down in front of the house pulled Dani away from the land of make-believe. A two-door, white Chevy Impala pulled up and parked at the front curb and a woman got out.

The caramel-colored young woman walked toward Dani.  She wore a tie-dyed tunic, white polyester bellbottoms, and she smiled at Dani the way a relative would smile when seeing a long-lost loved one.

The woman knelt down next to Dani and said, “I have something for you in my car.” Instantly, as she held Mrs. Beasley in my arms, Dani was scooped into the woman’s arms and into the parked car.

“Do you see that candy?” asked the woman, pointing to the back seat.  Dani could see the bag of Hershey chocolates waiting for her.

“Yes.”

Dani wondered how the woman knew that Hershey Chocolate bars were her favorite.

Dani jumped across the front seat toward the candy. The sweat from her legs squeaked against the vinyl seats as she made her way to the bag. Mommee would never allow her to eat candy before lunch. But Momme was at work and would never find out.

Before she could put the first piece of chocolate in her mouth, they were all three-including Mrs. Beasley-sitting in the car and speeding down the street.

Out of the rear window, Dani could see Grandmother’s house moving farther and farther away.

She never saw Mommee or Grandmother again.

Excerpt from Emotions Of The Mind:

“When women get ‘caught up’ in the emotions of their minds, it is almost impossible to walk in the reality of life.”

Carla D. Youngblood
This statement has caused me to wonder why God created us as emotional creatures. I was sure that when God created us, he knew the necessity and purpose of the state of our emotions. I have even wondered if our emotional state was the result of our humanity.

Church website: http://www.newvesselministries.org,farmto table(5)

1.Besides writing, what else do you like to do?

I absolutely love feeding the flock of Jesus as site pastor of New Vessels Ministries North. I love preaching and teaching the Word of God.

2. What inspired you to become an author?

I would like to think Amelia Bedelia played a huge role in my desire to write, but I know for sure it was a closer walk with God that pushed me into writing. It was a desire to reveal the secrets of pain and hurt I experienced, hoping someone else may read and become healed.

3. What was your first reaction when your debut novel was published?

When I held that printed book in my hand, I literally began to do what the black folks calls Shout. I danced and praised God all around my house. It was so surreal and I felt like God proved He trusted me to reach those I would not ordinarily be able to reach by spoken word.

4. Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

Preferably somewhere relaxing on vacation getting ready to start another novel or preaching in Africa alongside my favorite pastor of all time, but certainly still doing the two things I love, preaching the Gospel and writing books.

5. Do you have any new projects that you are currently working on?

Yes, I am currently about to release “Enduring Love” which was featured in an anthology this year. I have some other things in the crockpot and next year will be a phenomenal year for me if the Lord wills.

6. What advice can you give to anyone who wants to become an author?

Stay true to you. Whatever you like to read, is probably what you will write the best. Don’t allow anyone to persuade you to write anything you do not whole heartedly believe in or allow them to alter your train of thoughts for the sake of good editing. Say what you want to live on longer than you will because words are powerful and whatever you write can last a lifetime. Regardless to those who say you can’t, or the spirit of fear that will urge you not to write, pray first, push through, and prevail.

farmto table(2)

Here is Danyelle’s inspiration behind her book, Put It In Ink:

Reading is my hobby and although I love romance, my favorite genre is Christian or Inspirational Fiction. Writing is my love and my job. I write so that others will be able to see God’s hands of mercy and His grace. While some people never make it or feel comfortable in the Christian communal place called the church, I write so that they will get that opportunity at least once a year. Put It In Ink was one of the first books I ever wrote. It is as if the more adamant I became to finish this book, God kept moving into another direction. My set time came and my prayer is that God heal hearts. I know this book is in His timing so it will do what He has set it in the atmosphere to do.

30 Days 30 Authors- Darliss Batchelor

Hi everyone!! The 30 Days 30 Authors event continues with Darliss Batchelor! Let’s get to know her and her books as she talks about how she became an author.

Now, here’s Darliss! 🙂

IMG_2804 (1)[9499].jpg

farmto table(6)

It was on a white sand beach in Cozumel, Mexico that Darliss received the call to write her first book. Secrets was born ten years later and she hasn’t stopped. Her books Hell is a Skyscraper: A Trio of Novelettes and Something Else to Want followed. Her newest book, The Make-Believe Wives, joined her book family in June 2017. Walking in the footsteps of her Christian playwright grandmother, Darliss was also commissioned to write and witnessed the performance of her short play, One Simple Yes.

A passionate writer, Darliss desires to write stories of fiction that have a profound and lasting impact on the lives of her readers. She continues to work toward the commission to write entertaining inspirational and women’s fiction for years to come.

When she is not writing, she can be found spending time with her husband of over thirty years, Greg, her son, Brandon and grandson, Bentley. She also enjoys reading, cruising, Detroit Pistons basketball and watching court shows on television.

You can find more information about Darliss at her website at www.DarlissBatchelor.com and on social media at www.FaceBook.com/booksbyDarliss.

farmto table(5)

1.  Besides writing, what do you like to do?

My absolute favorite thing to do is to spend time with my wonderful husband, my amazing son and my awesome grandson. I also enjoy reading, watching court shows and Detroit Pistons basketball.

2. What inspired you to become an author?

I felt a calling to write. Story ideas would come to mind and I felt compelled to give voice to them. I would hear voices speak to me and I knew I had to tell their stories. Now, it has become a way of life for me.

3. What was your first reaction when your debut novel was published?

The moment I laid eyes on the proof for my first book, I cried. I mean, I cried big tears. I never know what the next release will be until one book separates itself from the others. It took me ten years to get to that point and to finally hold it in my hands was surreal. The truth is though I’m now four books in I still get a little misty-eyed when I see my name on the front the first copy of a book.

4. Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

There are a few things I hope to accomplish in the next five years in addition to writing. Some of the major things I would love to accomplish include:

  • Holding a specialized writing conference.
  • Operating a nonprofit to minister to women in crisis.
  • Operating a program to promote literacy among school-aged children.

5. Do you have any new projects you are currently working on?

I do have a few projects I’m itching to get to work on. There is a three-book series called “The Marriage Bed” and stand-alone projects titled “What is God’s Name?” and “Worship Widows” I’m diving into.

6. What advice can you give to anyone who wants to become an author?

I think the best advice I can give an aspiring author is to read as much and as often as possible. Each book is like a college course in writing. I believe if one pays close attention during the reading of a book, you can learn a lot about what to do and what not do.

I also think it’s important to exercise that writing muscle. Whether it’s journaling or utilizing writing prompts, I think writing regularly is imperative.

Book Excerpt The Make-Believe Wives:

            Chapter 1

Janay slammed the glass into the bottom of the sink and watched it break into a million pieces. She chased it with two plates and a bowl that were within reach. No need to worry about washing those. Frightened by the noise, her baby girl screamed and she joined her. Unlike Naomi, Janay’s scream was from sheer frustration. She pulled herself together and went to gather her daughter from the adjoining family room. Naomi raised her arms as her mother approached and Janay picked her up. Once comforted, the toddler wiggled to get back to her playtime. Janay returned her to the center of the toys she had spread out over the family room floor and exhaled.

Her husband, Evan, had taken Nahla and Nia out for a daddy-daughter day. Naomi was too young for today’s activity. Janay returned to the kitchen and stared at the glass and ceramic gumbo in the sink. She picked up a few of the larger pieces of glass and sat them on the granite countertop, mentally adding resealing it to her already overloaded to-do list. She remembered literally vibrating with excitement when they bought this stone. Now, it brought tears.

Janay went to the bathroom to wash her face, hoping it would make her feel better. She pulled the plush fire engine red face towel from the bar and ran cold water over it. Looking in the mirror, she noticed the frustration etched in her face and the tent city that had formed below her eyes. These had become her constant companions. She patted the area with the cold towel and went back to the family room to check on Naomi. Her routine had gotten old.

***

Janay watched as Evan moved bowls and plates around in the cabinet, undoubtedly looking for something in particular. Next, he searched the dishwasher. “Hmph,” Evan said as he closed the door, looking at her with both hands on his waist, which usually meant he was stumped about something.

“Babe, do you know what happened to that blue bowl? I can’t find it.”

“Which one?” Janay asked trying to figure out the best way to tell him about his favorite cereal bowl’s fate.

“We only had one. It was deep blue.”

“It got broken. Accidentally. The other day,” she replied.

Evan stepped down into the room and sat next to his wife on the beige leather sofa. “Is everything okay?”

“Yes. Why?”

“A lot of dishes are getting broken lately. I wonder why.” He looked at her so intently it was clear he already knew the answer.

“You think so?” She tilted her head to the side.

“I keep finding broken dishes in the garbage. What’s going on?” Evan reached for her hand.

“I drop a dish or two from time to time. The ceramic floor is unforgiving.” She shrugged, “No big deal.”

“If it was more than that you would tell me, right?”

“Yes, you would be the first to know.”

30 Days 30 Authors- LaToya C. Martin

Happy Sunday everyone!! Today’s author during the  30 Days 30 Authors event is LaToya C. Martin! Here is her story into the literary world as she talks about her life away from writing, as well as her inspiration for becoming an author.

Now, here’s LaToya! 🙂

thumbnail_269A9643[9495]

farmto table(6)

The first-time novelist LaToya C. Martin has loved writing since childhood. LaToya hails from Houston, where she raises a precocious daughter and teaches students with hearing loss, all the while remaining an active member of her church and community.

 farmto table(5)

1.   Besides writing, what else do you like to do?

I’m a single parent so my daughter keeps me pretty busy but I love to travel. I went to Hawaii for the first time this summer and loved it! I also love spending time with family and friends.

2. What inspired you to become an author?

I’ve always loved writing since I was a child. I recall winning first place for a writing competition in elementary school and the sense of accomplishment even at a young age. It took many years (17 years to be exact) for me to go through the publishing process but I wanted to become an author because even though Pain’s Purpose is fictional, I know that there is a message embedded within its pages and I want to share that message with the world.

3. What was your first reaction when your debut novel was published?

I went through a gamut of emotions. Holding my first novel in my hands was surreal. I was overwhelmingly grateful to God for my dream actually becoming a reality.

4. Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

In the next 5 years, I want to have published at least 3 more books.  I’m new to the “author world” and I know it takes time for people to trust the quality of your work enough to purchase it so in the years to come I see myself with an established and growing readership.

 5. Do you have any new projects that you are currently working on?

I wrote a children’s book and am currently searching for an illustrator. I’m also working on the sequel to Pain’s Purpose!

6. What advice can you give to anyone who wants to become an author?

Be ready for rejection even when you feel that your work is brilliant. There are so many people who write and do it well so traditional publishers can’t accept everything. Research and take time to think about the right option for you. The hard work really comes after you publish. We think about all of the time and effort that it takes to write the book but they energy required to promote your work intensifies especially if you are self published. Don’t be discouraged if you’re not selling as many copies as you would like. It’s a marathon not a sprint so continue to put yourself out there and you’ll find the people who will support your work!

Excerpt from Pain’s Purpose:

After drying himself off, he wrapped the towel around his waist, exposing his toned frame. He stood in front of the sink and wiped off the blanket of fog that covered the mirror. Staring into the mirror, he pondered on the man he had become—a man who solved his problems with a bottle of beer; a man who occasionally beat his wife out of his own frustrations; a man who couldn’t find a job if his life depended on it, even with a degree from a prestigious black university; a disgrace, worse than his absentee father. The list of failures was endless. He felt sick to his stomach. His own reflection disgusted him. What kind of man was he? Did he even deserve to have her back in his life? At this point, the answer was crystal clear: no. As he stood there, taking a hard look at himself, his eyes were finally opened. It was time to do an about-face and make some serious changes in his life. Then and only then would he be worthy enough to be an upright husband and father, one his son or daughter deserved.
