author interview

Besides writing, what else do you like to do?

Reading is the other thing I’ve enjoyed most since childhood. I also like baking and cake decorating, but don’t get to do a lot of either anymore. I spend a lot of time watching crime drama.

What inspired you to become an author?

I started reading at a very early age and one day it occurred to me that I could write stories as good as the ones I was reading. In high school I started writing ‘novels’ in exercise books that I taped together. My classmates passed them around and that’s where my ‘career’ began. I left that alone for over 20 years and started writing again in 2004. Writing novels was a natural progression from the articles and short stories I was crafting at that time.

What was your first reaction when your debut novel was published?

I wore an ear-to-ear grin for days. I still couldn’t believe a publisher had said yes and that I had also signed two other contracts almost at the same time.

Where do you see yourself in the next five years?

I’ll always be crafting stories, but I see myself going back to teaching writing workshops, which I started doing in 2011. I hope by then I’ll be a household name in Jamaica and will have enough of a following so I can write full-time.

What advice would you give to anyone who wants to become a writer?

The biggest favour a writer can do for himself/herself is to learn the craft. Like anything else, your voice and skill level will take time to develop. Consider that time your apprenticeship. With the many changes in publishing in the last five years, it’s important to study the industry in order to avoid the many pitfalls that wait for unsuspecting writers. Get to know other writers and form relationships. Most importantly, write your stories. Each one helps to sell the other, and don’t forget to have fun along the way.

EXCERPT
Contraband

Janine followed Paul to the door, twisted the lock and used her body to keep it open.

“Take care of yourself,” he said.

She looked at him, her eyes telling him something he didn’t quite understand. She sighed—it was a sound of resignation—and eased forward. He got a whiff of her earthy perfume before she pulled his head down and offered her mouth.

He let her kiss him until he couldn’t resist the pull of her soft lips. His hand came up to hold her head in place as he nuzzled her lips, which opened for him. Somewhere in his mind, he registered the door clicking shut.

He didn’t know how long they stood there, tasting each other. He kissed her neck, relishing the faint saltiness of her skin and when they separated, he questioned her without speaking. She leaned into him, giving permission without uttering a sound. After a slow and thorough kiss, she led him out of the living room and down the short corridor to her bedroom.

He watched her undress, hungry for what he had enjoyed during their single encounter. He cradled her rounded tummy and let his hands rediscover her body. She whimpered and reached for him. He shucked off his footwear and clothing and they fell into her bed.

Instinctively, Paul understood that she needed no foreplay. Their thirst for each other was urgent, intense, and desperate. Paul cast everything aside, but the present moment. They were together again. That was the only thing that mattered.

He tried not to hurt her during their fierce union, feeling as though starved of something only she could provide. In turn, she clung to him as if she feared he would disappear and leave her unfulfilled.

The combination of feathery caresses, her warm breath in his ear and urgent moans sent him soaring to his peak. Even as he lost sense of time and space, he admitted to himself that he didn’t want to be anywhere else but with Janine.

When he could breathe again, Paul smoothed the hair away from her skin, but Janine tilted her head so he couldn’t see her face. She got up and slipped out of the room, shutting the bathroom door between them.

A sigh escaped from him as he dashed sweat away from his forehead. She was crying, already regretting what they’d done. He got up and though disoriented from their frenzied coupling, he pulled on his jocks, jeans, and boots. He zipped his pants and retrieved his shirt from where it had fallen on the floor.

As he struggled with his buttons, he questioned whether he was doing the right thing. Shaking his head in defeat, he decided it was better to leave her alone to sort through her feelings. He’d call later.

He let himself out, unable to understand how one woman could complicate his life in such a short time. As sterile as his past had been, Paul hoped things settled back to normal and gave him a chance to pick up where he left off before Janine. He held little hope that she’d cast her objections aside because they’d made love again. It would take much more than that to satisfy her.
