The past month has been the worst I’ve ever experienced. Never would I have imagined I’d be sitting in the ER at Methodist Hospital waiting on word regarding my son and my sister-in-law. When I heard from my mother-in-law Daphne they were involved in a car accident, my heart dropped. I was already having the night from hell thanks to my soon-to-be ex-wife, Jennifer and my former friend, Carla, so this pretty much fucked me up even more.
It has been 30 minutes since I arrived with Daphne and still no word on the two. I found this strange considering someone should have informed the family how they were doing. I looked over to the other side of the room and saw Jennifer being consoled by the guy I caught her cheating with. I still couldn’t believe she would do that in our damn house! She better be glad I didn’t flip out on her ass because she, along with her pretty boy toy would have been the ones in the hospital. I know I shouldn’t be thinking about that right now, but I get angry every time I look at her.
I felt a hand go across my shoulder and looked to see my sister Elise staring at me.
“You sure you don’t want anything? Something to eat or drink?”
I shook my head and put my head in my hands. The waiting was becoming too much.
“Maybe you should get some fresh air. We’ll get you if we hear anything,” my other sister, Cheryl suggested. She, along with Marcus, Riana and Shawn were heading back to Baker when I called Cheryl about the news. They, as well as my dad and Jared waited with me. I appreciated them being here because I didn’t know what I would have done if they weren’t.
I looked up and saw Jennifer staring at me. I shook my head, not wanting to talk to her.
“Please, just talk to me.”
“Why? I have nothing to say to you.”
“I know you hate me right now but our son and my sister are both in the hospital. We should put our differences to the side and focus on their recovery.”
“I will, but that doesn’t mean I have to talk to you.”
Everyone looked at us, not knowing what was going on. No one knew what happened earlier so they all probably wondered what was going on. I saw Chad trying to come over to me, but Shanice pulled him back down in his seat. Good choice.
“What is going on with you two? You were like this before we came to the hospital.” Daphne said. She tried to ask me on the drive to the hospital but I wouldn’t talk to her. I’m glad she drove since I had a little buzz in me from the brandy I drunk earlier. I still felt the effects, which was making me feel a little incoherent.
“Just walk away, Jennifer,” Elise said.
“He’s my husband.”
“And he doesn’t want to talk to you. Evidently, you’ve done something to piss him off, so just go.”
“Listen, I don’t need your permission to talk to my damn husband,” Jennifer said, getting into Elise’s face.
Elise jumped up and got into Jennifer’s face. “You better be glad we’re in a hospital because your ass would be on that damn ground right now.”
“Alright, we’re not doing this here,” Jared intervened as he pulled Elise away from Jennifer. Chad came over and grabbed Jennifer.
“Don’t you two have any respect? We’re in a hospital, damn it!” my dad exclaimed, looking at Elise.
“She doesn’t need to be in my face.”
“Calm down sis, it’s not worth it,” I said.
I glanced over at Chad who gave me a dirty look. He had the audacity to look at me crazy when he was the one screwing my wife.
“Sorry excuse for a husband,” he mumbled.
I laughed. He was really testing my patience. Instead of going off on him I got up,
told Elise and my dad I needed to be alone and to text me once a doctor come out and went
to the exit. I went toward the sitting area to sit on the bench when I saw Alicia
walking from the parking lot. She saw me and came over. She wrapped her arms around me and
“Hey. I know this is a stupid question, but how are you holding up?” she asked.
I sighed. “Better than expected. You didn’t have to come.”
“I know, but I wanted to.”
I stared at her while she gave a sweet smile. “Did you need anything?”
I shook my head. “No. Thank you for being here.”
“No problem. You have been nothing but nice to me, so I’m glad to return the favor. But why are you out here? Shouldn’t you be with your wife right now?”
I laughed. “The wife that was cheating on me a few hours ago? No thanks.”
Alicia gave a shocked look. “What? And you saw her…”
“Yeah, unfortunately. In fact, the guy she cheated with brought her here. Crazy right?”
“Wow. I’m sorry Kevin, you don’t deserve that.”
“It’s fine. I’m not trying to worry about her right now. I just need to know if my son and my sister-in-law are okay.”
Alicia nodded. I sat down on the bench and she did the same. I looked at the night sky and sighed.
“I’m pretty sure you had plans tonight. I’m sorry if I ruined them by calling you.”
She smiled. “Are you kidding? I was doing my normal Saturday night routine sitting at home watching a scary movie. I don’t go out much.”
“Why not? A beautiful woman like you stuck at home? That’s hard to believe.”
“Well, believe it. All I do is go to work and go home. I may have the occasional evening out, but it’s nothing major.”
I sighed. “Maybe it’s good that you do. Being with someone can bring nothing but trouble.”
“I wouldn’t say that. If you’re with the right person it wouldn’t be so bad.”
I nodded. “I guess you’re right.”
I continued to look at the night sky, wishing the night turned out differently. I hope and pray Thomas and Pat are okay.
I looked up and saw Elise staring at me. I looked around, noticing I was no longer in the private room at Wonderwild, but instead at Elise’s. I saw the looks on my family’s faces, wondering if I’m going to go nuts or do something stupid, like bang another co-worker. That was a damn mistake that I wish I could erase.
The past two months have been a damn roller coaster. Honestly, I don’t know how I’ve kept it all together for this long; but I think after what happened with Alicia, I’m finally going to lose it.
“How did I get here?”
“We brought you here, remember,” Jared said. He came over to me and sat down. “Now, we need to know if Alicia is lying about you getting her pregnant.”
I put my head in my hands and sighed. “I didn’t get her pregnant. We used a condom. It could have broken or something, I don’t know.”
“Kev, you have a big problem on your hands. You knew how obsessed Alicia was with you and you fell into her trap. We knew this was going to happen,” Marcus said.
“Thank you so much for that reminder, Marcus. As if I didn’t know this was going to happen.”
“Well, you should have.”
“There’s no point in going in circles pointing fingers at who’s to blame for this. The bottom line is that you have two kids coming, Kevin. Not only that, but you could lose your job over this. You really have to figure out where your life is heading because in the past two months you have pretty much destroyed it,” Cheryl said.
“I had my life in order. I was with Carla and we were going to be a family. Now, I don’t even know if we will.”
“Leave that to us. We’ll go over and talk to Carla and see how she’s doing,” Riana said.
“Thank you. Please, just tell her I love her, okay?”
“Of course,” she said. Elise told Jared to lock up as she, Riana, and Cheryl went to the door. I turned and stared at the guys and sighed. I got up and hit my fist on the wall, causing a slight dent.
“I can’t believe this is happening just as soon as I was trying to make things work with Carla. We finally had our chance and I fucked it up.”
“I wouldn’t say that. You and Carla have been through a lot, including dealing with Jennifer. If you can do that, then you can pretty much survive anything,” Shawn said.
I shook my head. “This time is different. Carla thinks I lied to her about using protection. I have to prove to everyone, especially Carla, that the child Alicia is carrying is not mine.”
“And how are you going to do that?” Jared asked.
I looked at him and then to the wall that I just punched. “I’ll find a way. I have to if I want Carla back.”
Growing up, my mom always told me that life could be unpredictable. Boy, was she right. Never in my 27 years did I expect my life to become so complicated. I wished my mom was still here so I could talk to her, because I really need her advice right now. She was the voice of reason and gave such great advice.
I picked up my suitcase and looked around at the room that my husband and I shared for the past six months. Although I should feel sad about leaving, a part of me was actually excited. I haven’t been in my own place in years, so I was looking forward to going to it and not having to hear anyone’s nagging. If I did, I’m sure I’ll be getting ready to stab someone soon. And I’m not a violent person, but for the past few months, I definitely was tempted to be.
I was putting a few things into a bag when the front door opened and my husband walked in. He looked happy, but once he saw me with my suitcase, his smile immediately turned into a frown.
“What are you doing, Asia?”
“I thought you were going to be home late.”
“Don’t change the subject. What are you doing with your suitcase? What’s going on?”
“As if you didn’t know. What did you think, Dwight that I was going to come back and everything was going to be okay? I can’t do this anymore. I tried to make things work between us, but just can’t.”
“Can’t what? Asia, I know things has been rough lately and I’m mostly the blame for it, but I promised you before we moved in here that I was going to get us back on track. I was going to get us to where we were before everything happened.”
“Are you? You have caused more issues than trying to fix the ones we had! I’ve been hearing that for the past 10 years and nothing has changed. It’s like a broken record Dwight and I’m tired of it. You have lie and cheated your way for the past few months and I can’t deal it with anymore.”
“So you’re leaving me? Where are you going to go?”
“I have somewhere I can go.” I said. I pushed past my husband and went to the door. He grabbed my arm and pulled me to face him.
“So you’re going to throw our marriage away because of what happened? I know I cheated and I’m sorry. I regret what I have done. As for our financial problems, I wasn’t the only one who wasn’t contributing, Asia.”
“I’ve been doing more in this relationship than you have. I’m not going to continue living this way. I refuse to. That’s why it’s best if we just walked away. ” I said and shrugged myself from his grasp.
I went to the door, praying that my ride was waiting for me somewhere else. I didn’t want him near the house in case Dwight showed up, in which he did. I didn’t need an altercation going down. If one did happened, that would had been another thing Dwight’s aunt would be blaming me for.
I walked to the kitchen as Dwight was yelling my name. I continued, not stopping to acknowledge him. If I did, I probably wouldn’t go through with my plan. Even though Dwight and I are having a rocky marriage, I was still in love with him. We have been together for half of our lives and it hurts to know that things has come to this, but I can’t continue being unhappy. I have gave him so many chances to change, but nothing never happened. To me, the line has drawn and it was time to move on.
I looked down the street and saw Bryon’s car parked. I really didn’t want to go because I know Dwight would follow me; but if I didn’t, Bryon would come to me, so I didn’t have a choice. I went to the car and saw him sitting in the driver’s side. He was smiling but later gave a concerned look when he saw the sad look I had.
“It’s Dwight. He knows.”
“Get in.” He said.
I quickly put my suitcase in the backseat and hopped in beside him. Before I could close the door, Dwight was near the car, giving me and Bryon a heated glance.
“I should had known! So you’re leaving me for him?! Are you kidding me?”
“Please Dwight, do not make a scene.”
“I knew something was going on between you two after that night. How long has this been going on?!”
“You’re the one to talk since you were cheating on your wife with your co-worker.” Bryon said.
Before I could say anything else, Bryon got out of the car and went to Dwight.
“Listen, we don’t want any problems. Just let Asia go so she can figure things out, okay.”
“This is between me and my wife, so I suggest you back the hell up.” Dwight said and shoved him.
Bryon grabbed Dwight by his shirt and threw him against his car, causing it to shake. The two began hitting each other, which was making me a little anxious. I didn’t want them to start fighting, because with their tempers, someone will possibly end up dead.
“Stop it, you two!” I yelled as I tried to break it up. They definitely didn’t need to fight in the neighborhood because one of these neighbors will be quick to call the police.
Byron sucker-punched Dwight, but Dwight shook it off as he threw Bryon onto the ground. I was trying to push Dwight off of Bryon as he had him pinned on the ground, when his elbow went across my chin, knocking the wind out of me. Before I knew it, my body was heading to the ground, knocking me out cold from the contact.
My life was already a roller coaster before this night, but now, things were even more complicated. I never imagined I would be leaving my husband for another man, but with the way things has been, it was only a matter of time before I walked away…
